🎨Custom themes
Learn how to change the look and feel of Fortelling with themes. (Coming on September 29)
How Can I Customize Themes
Themes let you change how Fortelling looks while you write or plan. You can pick from predesigned options or build your own, so your workspace feels personal and comfortable.
How Do I Switch to a Different Theme
You can change themes directly from the home menu where you see your list of projects.
Tap the three lines in the top corner to open settings.
Select theme (look for the sun icon).
A full list of available themes will appear with names such as Fire Salamander, Duck, Seahorse, Raven, and Red Panda.
Tap on the theme you want and it will apply immediately.
How Do I Filter Themes
At the top of the theme list you will find filters that help you quickly narrow down your choices. • Dark: For high contrast and low light environments • Light: Bright and clean themes • Subtle: Softer colors with minimal distraction • Prominent: Strong and bold palettes
Filters make it easy to find the mood or energy that matches your current writing session.
How Do I Create a Custom Theme
If none of the predesigned themes fit your style you can make your own.
From the theme screen tap the plus sign in the bottom right corner.
A page will open with three questions: • When do you write? Choose between light mode or dark mode • What describes you? Select introvert for subtle colors or extrovert for vibrant colors • What color do you like? Pick your favorite color to set the base of your theme
After answering the questions your custom theme will be created with suggested colors.
Tap the slider icon at the top to open advanced settings. Here you can personalize further by changing: • Primary color • Secondary color • Accent color • Background color • Card color (the backdrop for notes and story elements)
Save your theme.
Your custom theme will now appear in your list ready to be applied anytime.
Why Do Theme Colors Matter
Colors influence mood and focus. Choosing the right palette is more than a style choice—it can affect how productive and inspired you feel while writing. This is based on color psychology, where different colors trigger different associations.
Blue
Calm, focused, steady
Long writing sessions or editing
Red
Energetic, intense, passionate
Action scenes or brainstorming
Green
Balanced, creative, natural
Worldbuilding and exploration
Yellow
Optimistic, motivating, lively
Drafting fresh ideas
Purple
Imaginative, mysterious, inspiring
Fantasy writing and deep worldbuilding
Black/Dark
Dramatic, focused, low strain in dim light
Night writing sessions
White/Light
Clean, clear, open
Bright environments and daytime writing
Picking colors that match your story’s tone can even help you stay immersed. A fiery palette may put you in the mood to write epic battles, while a gentle pastel theme might suit romantic or reflective chapters.
What Are Some Tips for Using Themes
• Dark themes are easier on the eyes if you often write at night • Prominent themes work well when you want strong visual cues and energy • Subtle themes are great for long sessions when you want minimal distractions • Custom themes can match your story’s tone. For example a sea green palette for a nautical tale or fiery reds for a battle heavy saga • Use the three questions as a quick way to create a theme and then fine tune it with the slider icon if you want more control
