# Files

## How does fortelling manage your files better?

In Fortelling you are able to label and link each of your files. Making them easier to find but also to connect them directly with other story elements. Everything done in one place.

## Types of files supported

You can store and organize different types of files:

* **Images**: Uploaded from your device, imported directly from Pexels, or created using Fortelling’s avatar creator.
* **Notes**: Text notes created within Fortelling.
* Uploaded Files: PDFs and other document types.

## Folders

Fortelling enables you to order your notes in folders. You can create a folder the same way you can create a note. All folders are always at the top of the list above the notes. &#x20;

### Creating folders & files

To add new files:

1. Press the big yellow button with an add (+) icon.
2. Choose to create a folder, a note, or upload files from your device.

### File tree view

Open the treeview to quickly explore all your existing folders and notes. You can tap on an item to open it in full screen. Unfold folders by tapping the arrow icon to see their contents.

### Moving files to folders

There are two easy ways to reorganize your files:

#### 1. Drag and drop

* Long-press the file you wish to move.
* Drag it into the desired folder.

*Pro tip: Drag an item on the breadcrumbs to move a file up in the tree view.*

#### 2. Using the context menu

* Open the file you want to move.
* Tap the context menu (three-dot icon).
* Select Move, opening the file treeview.
* Choose the destination folder.

## Files

Order and digitize your notebook within Fortelling. Create notes for background lore, letters, or any other written information you have for your story. When searching, Fortelling looks across all folders, not just the one you’re currently in, to ensure you never miss a file.

### Filtering and ordering

Customize how your files are displayed in the list view:

* Filter files by labels you’ve assigned.
* Order files by:
  * Alphabetical order
  * Creation date
  * Recent edits
  * Custom order
* Files marked as favorites appear at the top of your list.

### Grid view and list view

<figure><img src="https://1916472331-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FFR1c40OqcLTLBKjzbDgF%2Fuploads%2FvxmWwv0MIz02pQDTTRYj%2FFile_list_vs_grid_Moment.jpg?alt=media&#x26;token=606a4095-3656-48ec-85f0-6ca1e2a8c13f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You can choose how you want to see your files. Grid view gives you a visual overview that's perfect for images and visual research, while list view provides a compact, detailed look at all your files.

#### Gallery view for folders

Click on any folder containing images and you can view all images in a gallery format. This feature is ideal when you want to browse through all your character references, location photos, or inspiration images without opening each file individually.

#### Select and manage multiple files

File management is now much more efficient. You can select multiple files at once and delete or move them all in a single action, saving you time when reorganizing your project.

#### File extensions visible

The info sheet for each file displays the file extension. This helps you quickly identify file types and ensures you're opening the right file for your needs.

#### PDF preview in the app for Pro users

You no longer need to leave Fortelling to view PDF files. Preview your PDFs directly in the app, whether they're research papers, style guides, or reference documents.

### Context menu

Tap the context menu (three-dot icon) on any file for quick actions:

* Favorite/Unfavorite: Highlight important files.
