# Story Elements

Story elements give each piece of your world a dedicated, searchable, linkable entry so nothing gets lost in scattered notes.

## What are story elements?

Story elements are the building blocks of any narrative. They represent characters, locations, items, species, and other components that shape your universe. Each element stores the details you need to keep your story consistent and organized.

## General

Writing a story is like laying out a jigsaw puzzle. You have characters, locations, items, and many more background puzzle pieces. In Fortelling, we call these items story elements. Each story element has its own tool in the app. Each tool has a few default blocks with a template that includes data attributes, images, notes, and labels.

## Templates & Attributes

With our default Templates, Fortelling covers various genres and approaches to organizing your thoughts. You can also use the extensive lists for inspiration. You can add multi-line text for more extensive answers. Your attributes will be listed on the story element's page in a collapsible. If there is no data for a category, it will be hidden.

## Custom fields

Fortelling offers a wide range of default templates containing a list of attribute fields to fill in for each story element type. However, we can't cover everything. You can add your own fields in the custom fields category. Read more on the custom tools page for more customization options.

## Images

There are two types of images you can connect to a story element:

1. **Main image**: this image will represent this story element throughout the app. It will be used in lists, at the top of the element's page, and as the main image on pinboards.
2. **General image**: you can add multiple images to this carousel. It only shows on the story element's page. Use this to create a mood board for your character.

You can add images from your image gallery, by uploading a new image, or by searching the online Pexels library.

## Notes

If you need to attach more text to a story element, link a note. You can use the rich text editor to structure your text more organized.

## Labels

Use labels to tag story elements and cluster them together. Each tool allows you to filter, on a specific label.
