πFortelling 4.2
The new chapter of Fortelling.
What's new in Fortelling 4.2

We've made Fortelling even more powerful and easier to use with this update. Whether you're organizing your story world, managing research files, or streamlining your workflow, version 4.2 brings features that help you work faster and smarter.
Enhanced files tool

The files tool has received a major upgrade in this version. You can now add images directly to your notes, upload multiple files at once, and view your files in new ways that make organization effortless.
Add images to notes

Your notes can now include images alongside your text. This is perfect for visual reference or any research material that benefits from visual context.
Upload multiple images at once
Gone are the days of uploading files one by one. You can now select and upload multiple images simultaneously, dramatically speeding up your workflow when adding research materials or reference images.
Name and label images immediately after upload

When you upload an image or download one from Pexels, you can now name it and add a label right away. No more going back later to organize unnamed files, you can keep everything tidy from the moment you add it.
Grid view and list view

You can now choose how you want to see your files. Grid view gives you a visual overview that's perfect for images and visual research, while list view provides a compact, detailed look at all your files.
Gallery view for folders
Click on any folder containing images and you can now view all images in a gallery format. This feature is ideal when you want to browse through all your character references, location photos, or inspiration images without opening each file individually.
Select and manage multiple files
File management is now much more efficient. You can select multiple files at once and delete or move them all in a single action, saving you time when reorganizing your project.
File extensions now visible
The info sheet for each file now displays the file extension. This helps you quickly identify file types and ensures you're opening the right file for your needs.
PDF preview in the app for Pro users
You no longer need to leave Fortelling to view PDF files. Preview your PDFs directly in the app, whether they're research papers, style guides, or reference documents.
Great uses for PDF storage
Writing craft books and guides you reference frequently
Historical research documents for period fiction
Maps or diagrams for your story world
Submission guidelines from publishers or agents
Duplicate story elements
You can now duplicate story elements directly inside your project. This feature saves you time when you need to create similar characters, locations, or other elements without starting from scratch.
How to duplicate a story element
Open the story element you want to duplicate
Look for the duplicate option in the element's menu
The duplicated element appears in your project with all the original content copied over
Rename and modify the duplicate to fit your needs
Performance improvements
We've made significant improvements to the image and file upload experience. Uploads are now faster and more reliable, and moving files between folders is noticeably quicker.
What this means for you:
Less waiting when uploading research materials
Smoother experience when reorganizing large numbers of files
More time creating and less time managing your project files

Frequently asked questions
Why are my story elements no longer on the homescreen?
The app now only displays your favorite elements on the home screen carousel. Not only your first tool, but all tools in a category will now be displayed in this carousel. This gives you more control to configure your dashboard.
How to recover my projects?
Sorry about that! There was a bug that hid some of your projects. Fortunately, this was fixed in update 4.0.3.
We want to stress that no data is lost. In this update, we make a new copy of all your Fortelling data. Your original projects created in 3.4 are safe and untouched. If you encounter a bug, please reach out to us, and you can migrate the project again once the bug is fixed.
How can I change a label?
The label management screen has moved to the project settings. However, you can manage your labels in the pop-up when selecting a label.
Pro tip: Double-tap a label in the selection screen to open it for editing.
How to use the in-app bug report tool?
Open the app menu
Report a bug
A new popover will appear; follow these steps. Make sure to leave your email if you want us to contact you.
