Labels in Fortelling are your secret weapon for keeping your creative projects organized and easy to navigate. Whether you're juggling numerous characters, detailed settings, critical events, or multiple files, labels help you quickly identify, group, and manage your story elements.

What are labels?

Labels are customizable tags that can be attached to story elements, boards, notes, files, and more. They allow you to categorize and quickly retrieve items relevant to your storytelling workflow.

How to manage labels

You can manage your labels directly where you need them. Whenever you're attaching a label, a convenient pop-up that lets you:

  • Create new labels: Tap the big yellow add (+) button.

  • Edit existing labels: Long-press on a label to edit.

  • Reorganize labels: Long-press and drag to the target folder.

  • Delete unnecessary labels: Edit a label and press delete.

You can also manage labels from the settings screen.

Organizing labels into folders

To keep your labels tidy, you can group them into folders:

  1. Tap the big yellow add (+) button.

  2. Choose to add either a new folder or a new label.

Pro-tip: Organize labels into folders specific to each tool or area (e.g., Characters, Locations, Files). This helps you quickly find labels relevant to the task at hand.

Moving labels

To reorganize labels:

  • Long-press and drag labels into folders.

  • To move a label up a level, drop it onto the breadcrumbs at the top.

Searching labels

Fortelling's label search scans through all available labels, making it easy to find exactly what you're looking for.

Editing labels

  • Long-press a label within the selection pop-up to edit it directly.

How to attach labels

Navigate to a story element, timeline, board, or file and tap on 'Select label'. A new pop-up appears with the label manager. Select the labels you wish to attach. Your selections will only be saved when you tap the Save button.

Practical Examples

Here are some creative ways to use labels effectively:

  • Tag characters as "Protagonist", "Antagonist", or "Side Character" to quickly find them.

  • Label files by purpose, such as "Draft", "Final", or "Research".

  • Use labels such as "Chapter 1" and "Chapter 2" to easily track the story's progression.

  • For roleplaying, label encounters or NPCs (Non-Player Characters) to quickly access relevant information during gameplay.

Tips & Tricks

  • Be consistent: Create clear, intuitive naming conventions for labels.

  • Color coding: Use distinct colors to differentiate the meaning of labels. For example:

    • Red for villains

    • Blue for protagonists

    • Green for locations

    • Yellow for important plot points

  • Regular maintenance: Periodically review and update your labels to keep them tidy and avoid clutter.

  • Quick filtering: Labels streamline your workflow, allowing rapid filtering in file lists and searches.
