# World Building

## What is Worldbuilding

Worldbuilding is the difference between telling someone a character is in a forest and making them feel the damp moss under their boots, smell the decaying pine needles, and hear that something is following them.&#x20;

Worldbuilding in writing is the process of creating the setting, rules, and cultures that define a story’s universe. Writers build geography, history, societies, and magic systems to make their worlds believable. Effective worldbuilding gives readers context for why characters act as they do and how events unfold. Authors often draw maps, invent languages, or design political systems to keep their worlds consistent.&#x20;

In Fortelling, worldbuilding tools let you store these details in one place and connect them directly to your chapters and characters.

## Locations

Besides your characters, an essential story element are the locations your characters experience their story line in. Fortelling allows you to create any virtual world using a sublocation system. You can add an infinite amount of story element underneath eachother.

> Example: World > Countries > Cities > Streets > Houses > Floor of a house > Room

<details>

<summary>Is there a limit to how much I story elements I can create in Fortelling?</summary>
